“Wow! This is really exciting,” exclaimed Anthony Wong upon receiving the phone call announcing that his name had been drawn in the ‘Passport to South Hill’ Contest. And after successfully answering the skill-testing question, Anthony was declared our Grand Prize Winner.

The winning ballot was drawn on Monday, July 30th at 1:00 p.m., in accordance with Contest rules. Anthony, an Instructor at Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School came in to claim his prize the same afternoon and two South Hill Business Association board members Stephen Tam and Jinesh Shah were on hand to congratulate him.

The Grand Prize, a SONOS Audio System purchased by the Association and supplied by Sunny Electronics AVU, has three components, a Play 5 and two Play 1 speakers. Using local in-house WiFi technology, the system allows anyone in the home to play and control music in and from any room in their home, using a digital phone, tablet or computer. Anthony and his family can play their own individual playlists, tap into the connected SONOS playlists and Radio by TunedIn radio stations or create their own individual digital playlists using the SONOS features. One of the unique design characteristics of the Play5 component is also its provision for analog connection, so if family members have a vinyl collection or CDs for example, they can play them through their SONOS speakers. And the sound from the small speakers is incredibly good.

“My wife is going to love this system”, stated Anthony; “she currently listens to music directly from her phone.”

The Passport to South Hill Contest was launched during the Plug in to South Hill event on July 21st when the Association held an Eco and Science Fair for the whole family. Attendees at the Fair were handed a ‘passport’ and had eight (8) days to visit three businesses on Fraser Street within the South Hill Business Association boundaries between 41st and 50th avenues and obtain the initials of an attending employee at each location. No purchase was necessary. Once contestants added their own name and contact information the ‘passport’ became a ballot they dropped into the ballot box located inside The UPS Store on Fraser Street.

Congratulations, Anthony, from the South Hill Business Association on winning the Passport to South Hill Contest Grand Prize!

The South Hill Business Area celebrates the arrival of its new electric vehicle charging stations with Plug in to South Hill – an event to mark the occasion of the installation at the west side of 44th Ave. and Fraser St.

Electric vehicle owners driving to Vancouver or travelling around town will now have more East Vancouver fast charging options. They can drop in to Fraser St. and plug in while they spend time shopping, dining or doing business in the South Hill commercial area.

The outdoor fair on the Saturday, July 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. will entertain the whole family, rain or shine. Some of the activities include test driving the Meccanica Solo electric vehicles, listening to music at the event main stage, seeing and understanding marine animals with the Vancouver Aquarium’s AquaVan, an ocean wise initiative. Mike’s Critters will be there to entertain and educate visitors about various animals. Science World on the Road will engage visitors with four different activities including the Van de Graaff generator. The Ice Cream Truck will serve a delicious variety of ice creams to beat the heat.

Residents, visitors and business employees are encouraged to attend this community event with free admission, as we celebrate South Hill’s four new electric vehicle charging stations.

Starting towards the end of July, drivers will be able to charge their electric vehicle using the two Fast Charge and two Level 2 stations supported by the City of Vancouver and BC Hydro. The chargers will be located in the NE corner of the parking lot located directly south of 44th Avenue and behind the west Fraser Street shops. This EHub installation will also be listed on PlugShare, a North American digital map allowing electric vehicle drivers to locate the nearest charging station when on the go.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Coming to Fraser Street

VANCOUVER, July 11, 2018 – One of seven locations approved for a fast charging EHub station by Vancouver City Council is in the South Hill Business Area (SHBA) of Fraser Street. The SHBA commercial district covers Fraser Street from 41st to 50th avenues. Through July 2018, City contractors and BC Hydro will install two DC Fast Charging stations and two Level 2 stations at the northeast corner section of the parking lot located directly south of 44th Avenue at Fraser Street. The parking lot is one of several that stretch the length of Fraser Street between 43rd and 49th avenues, located behind the west Fraser Street shops.

“We are looking forward to South Hill becoming a ‘green-friendly’ commercial community for motorists from across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland and to adding our location to the national network of stations available to the visiting public. With car manufacturers poised to release a number of new electric vehicles into the marketplace next year and with the price of gasoline rising everywhere, the timing feels right to make a contribution to reduce pollution and be in step with the City’s mandate,” stated Susan Lilholt, Executive Director of the South Hill Business Association, one of 22 Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in Vancouver.

“Several factors came together to make this location ideal for an EHub installation,” says Ian Neville, Climate Policy Analyst for the City, “and the City’s investment here is part of the 2016 EV Ecosystem Strategy that will ensure EHubs are within easy reach of residents, near convenient amenities across the city. This location supports fast public charging in a key East Vancouver neighbourhood, ensuring better access for nearby residents and businesses. The charging stations here are the seventh and eighth DC Fast Chargers to be installed within Vancouver, with many more on the way.”
