The Story of Our Hot Tubs

If you have been around the South Hill (Fraser Street) area since the Labour Day weekend you might have noticed something new to the corner of 44th and Fraser. During the weekend a team of hardworking designers and their friends were busy installing the latest VIVA Vancouver temporary public space project. Our new Hot Tubs Parklet is sure to be a big hit in the community but something like this simply doesn’t happen overnight. The story of how the Hot Tubs came to Fraser Street go back as far as last Fall.

In November 2011, the Business Improvement Areas in the city were invited to attend a presentation by VIVA Vancouver. President Jack Hilton and Executive Director Aila Karpio represented the South Hill(Fraser Street) Business Association. Since there are no public spaces in South Hill, the BIA decided to submit a proposal to the City for a VIVA Vancouver project. We partnered with Designers Matthew Thomson and Erika Mashig for a temporary seating area for Fraser Street and the proposal was sent in by the deadline of February 14th 2012. The City approved the proposal called “Hot Tubs” in the end of March and since then the South Hill Business Association, VIVA Vancouver, and the designers have worked tirelessly to make this plan an actual reality.

The following link is a time series collection of photos highlighting how the design and construction of the Hot Tubs became a reality.
